The National Physical Laboratory - Teddington, Middlesex (SW London)

Caesium Atomic Clock
Caesium Atomic Clock

http://www.npl.co.uk

Duration: 7 hours

NPL is a world-leading National Measurement Institute, one of more than 50 worldwide. NPL keeps measurement science ahead of new requirements as the units become ever smaller and ever faster at single molecule and single electron level. Measurement is fundamental to everyday lives - from time-keeping and air quality to health screening and the internet.

In its time, the organisation has weighed Concorde, developed the atomic clock, invented radar and now leads the world in radiotherapy dosages and measurement of nanoparticles.

The visit will include science presentations and laboratory tours and also the opportunity to be measured with the infamous Laser Height Measuring Gauge. We will find out how NPL helps to save lives, prevent disaster, save the environment, keep our citizens safe and secure, and to create wealth.

The laboratory was built in the grounds of an 18th century manor house, Bushy House; the house is now part of NPL, and the remainder of the grounds constitute Bushy Park, a public park. On the other side of the park (a 30 minute walk from NPL) is one of England’s finest stately homes, Hampton Court Palace, with its famous maze. There will be about two hours of free time to explore Hampton Court (entrance fee £10).
